Is Google Plus Becoming More Relevant Than Facebook?
Google plus and Facebook Users are very opinionated and if asked about using Google plus, you might hear some or all of these quotes when asked:
- “Facebook is more popular than Google Plus”
- “Google+ is boring”
- “Everyone I know is on Facebook.”
People can argue which is more important all day long. But in the end, we have to ask ourselves: “Are we looking for an online entertainment source, or are we building an online business?”. In which case, you would seriously consider using Google+ on a daily basis.
Whether you’re trying to build an online business or just promote yourself and whatever it is you’re doing these days, we have to ask ourselves: “Is Google Plus more relevant than Facebook?”
Where Is Google Plus Traffic Coming From?
If you’re using Facebook correctly to send qualified traffic to your website or blog, it’s probably working just fine. But if you use Google plus properly, it will do the same. Taking a look at what is probably your two biggest sources of traffic to your site or blog which is search engine traffic and the traffic you get from referrals-we’ll examine why it could very well be that Google+ helps you in both of those areas, but may not be the “cure-all” for those hungry for more traffic.
Search Traffic and Referral Traffic Defined Using Google Plus
Generally, referral traffic leads you get from other blogs or sites on the internet. Search traffic would seem to be more obvious but you know the saying: “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” In terms of searching, Google is the big fish in the tank most definitely. But smart webmasters still want other search engine traffic of course. But for the time being, we can pretty much agree that Google is the one that everyone is focusing on.
And as big as Facebook has become, they’re still not as big as Google. The same goes for all of the other social networking sites. Sure, they’re important, but is Google+ becoming more relevant than Facebook? You might be wondering, “Does anyone care about Google+? It doesn’t have anything to do with searching or SEO does it?” You better believe it does! Google+ can help you in terms of both referral and search engine traffic.
Consider this: With the personalized search methodology Google uses, when we search on Google we see search results based on our past search history, our location and literally dozens of other factors. And even when you’re using Google but you’re not “Logged in,” Google uses almost 60 personalized factors to determine the search results that you get. So if you’re one of those asking “Is Google more relevant than Facebook,” it sure seems like Google has a strong grip, doesn’t it?
Adding Our Own Benefit to Google Plus
Like everyone else interested in social connections, you will or maybe have already set up a Google+ profile. Just like Facebook or Twitter, we need people to follow us. If you’ve already been on Twitter for any length of time you know that a rule of thumb is that a good way to get followers is to follow people and hope they follow you in return. That works to some extent but it’s not exactly the right attitude. We shouldn’t just want to follow just to get followed. We should be wanting to follow (and be followed by) those people whom we want to be associated with.
Is Google+ More Relevant Than Facebook On A Subconscious Level?
If you ask someone “Is Google+ becoming more relevant than Facebook,” you’ll probably get an answer that of course not because people are playing, marketing and chatting on Facebook every day (sometimes all day). But Google Plus is the silent stalker of sorts. While we consciously think about how important Facebook is to us, if someone told us that tomorrow Google would be gone forever, people would be pulling their hair out. Google certainly has a clear sense of direction. It doesn’t take more than a few seconds on Google’s home page before Google tells us what we need before we even realize we need it.
And Facebook is following along with what Google+ has been doing by introducing EdgeRank. EdgeRank is a Facebook algorithm that determines which stories appear in each user’s news feed. The algorithm is designed to hide boring posts, so if your Facebook post doesn’t score well, it isn’t shown much or maybe not at all. So we have to ask again: Is Google Plus more relevant than Facebook? It probably comes down to the same argument people have had for many years as to whether a Ford truck is better than a Dodge or a Chevrolet truck. Facebook fanatics will tout the power of things like EdgeRank. But Google+ fans will agree to a point but at the same time say “That ain’t no Google!”

People can make good arguments in favor of either Facebook or Google+. They’re both big, powerful platforms and while they’re competing for supremacy, we users have the wonderful ability to have our cake and eat it too. And for that matter, we can drive a Ford truck and a Dodge too, if we want.
