Using Essential Oils for Pest Control
Today we are going to talk about pest control with essential oils. This is a common problem that almost every household has had to encounter. There are a lot of chemical based pest sprays that can be purchased to deal with the issue; however, while these kinds of sprays do deal with the issue of unwanted insects in the home, they’re not the safest method and if used improperly, they can be very harmful to humans and pets. This article will discuss Pest Control with Essential Oils, one of the safest methods to go about removing pests from your home.
When you consider the risk to human health and also the environmental risks that chemical products have, more and more people are looking for natural ways to use pest control on unwanted insect pests in the home. Depending on the type of insects you’re dealing with, you may be able to conveniently and safely control pest problems using essential oils. Using essential oils as a pest control method means you’ll no longer have to worry about poisoning your family or your pets and you won’t be putting the environment at risk to damage by harmful chemicals.
Essential oils come from natural sources as opposed to a chemical factory and they’re easy to obtain. They can be purchased at stores that sell aromatherapy products, however, you run the risk of these oils being diluted, and through the internet. You don’t need a large quantity of essential oils to deal with unwanted pests; generally essential oils are very concentrated and most of the time only a few drops are what you need to deal with the problem. The specific oil or oils you will need will depend on the type of pest you are dealing with.
Pest Control With Essential Oils
Here are some recipes you can put together in your home using essential oils to help with pest control
Ants: To control ants you need a mixture of peppermint, patchouli and tea tree oils. Once you have combined these essential oils, use a cotton ball and dip it into the mixture and then place several of them in the affected areas of your home. The scent of these oils is quite good at keeping ants from coming in. You’ll need to replace the cotton balls after about five to seven days.
Mosquitoes: To deal with these nasty pests, combine peppermint, TerraShield (DoTerra Mixture) and lemon grass oil. You can combine them into a spray bottle and use it as an air freshener, or if you have something such as an aromatherapy burner, you can use that. Since essential oils are natural and safe, you can apply it to your skin. If you do use it on your skin when you go outside, combine the mixture with a carrier oil such as Rosehip oil.
Fleas: If you’re dealing with fleas on your pet or pets, you can make a braided cotton collar and dip it in an essential oil mixture to get rid of the fleas. You’ll want to use a mixture of lavender (about two drops), and one drop of thyme, oregano, and TerraShield. You’ll have to mix these ingredients with about a tablespoon of grain alcohol then dip the collar into it to make sure the collar has absorbed the mixture. Let your pet wear the collar and if need be, re-treat the collar with the oil mixture about once a month.
One of the biggest reasons that I chose to use essential oils and still do are the health benefits that are provided with them. They can be used aromatically, topically, and internally. Oils are also safe to use around pets, so you can use them around the house as barriers to bugs, dirt, etc. I think with all the drugs that have been put into our bodies, we need some sort of reprieve to let our bodies catch up and heal like they’ve been created to do. That being said, you definitely will need to get some oils and start fighting off pests the natural and healthy way!
